Sciatica and Slipped Disc
Sciatica is an unpleasant pain that can be felt in the lower back, buttock and/or parts of the leg and foot. It is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and it is often caused by compression or irritation of the nerve.
The most common cause of sciatica is a disc herniation or more commonly known as a slipped disc. A vertebral disc acts as a soft cushion that separates the bones in the spine. Due to repetitive stress such as prolonged sitting, poor lifting techniques and twisting movements, the disc bulges out and compresses the nerves. Besides pain, there may be other symptoms present including weakness, numbness and pins and needles in the legs and feet.
Each case that presents to the clinic is treated carefully and individually. A full history and neurological examination can give us a clear indicator as to the extent of the herniation. We will offer you an immediate private MRI scan if we deem further imaging is necessary prior to commencing your treatment.
