Dry Needling
Dry needling uses a single sterilised acupuncture needle to release myofascial trigger points, commonly known as knots.
Dry needling is often confused with acupuncture. Whilst they are both often sought out to relieve pain, and use the same type of sterilised needle, their mechanisms are quite different.
Acupuncture has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine and treatment is aimed at opening up and altering a person’s energy flow.
Dry needling is used to break down knots. No fluid is injected into the body which is where the term ‘dry’ comes from. It is thought to increase blood flow and oxygen to the muscles and activate the release of natural opioids which helps to reduce pain. It also causes a local twitch response, which is often felt by the individual and seen by the practitioner. This twitch response helps to disperse the chemicals in the muscles that carry pain signals to the brain.
