Shoulder, hip and knee pain

Shoulder

Impingement is a very common cause of shoulder pain. The tendon inside your shoulder joint catches on the bone and other surrounding tissues as you lift your arm.

Adhesive capsulitis, or more commonly known as frozen shoulder, happens when the capsule around your shoulder joint becomes inflamed. The reason this happens is not fully understood but several factors can predispose certain individuals. Pain is often the first symptom which can last for months, followed by the stiffness and reduced range of movement in all directions.

Bursitis is common problem in the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, and one that is often overlooked. A bursa is a fluid filled sac that reduces friction between tissues. They can become inflamed from overuse or direct trauma to the area.

Elbow

Common elbow conditions we treat include tennis and golfers’ elbow which often come about due to repetitive use.

Hip

As with the shoulder, you can get impingement in the hip but it is less common and often results from the shape of the hip and how deep the hip socket is.

Tendinitis, strains and hernia’s are common complaints we see that can cause hip pain.

Knee

Overuse injuries such as patellofemoral pain syndrome and tendinitis are among the most common conditions that cause knee pain. They often result from a sudden increase in the level of activity or a change to a person’s training schedule. A change in footwear and technique can also trigger off pain associated with overuse injuries.

Ligament and meniscus damage are common following injury. Many result from rotatory contact such as being tackled in football or taking a fall when skiing.

Foot

Plantar fasciitis is by far the most common foot problem that presents to our clinic. It can be very painful, especially first thing in the morning, and is often felt on the bottom of the foot around the heel and arch. It is frequently caused by starting a new exercise such as walking or running on hard surfaces; exercising with a tight calf and wearing shoes with little cushioning and support.

A combination of different treatments, such as cryotherapy, soft tissue work, stretching and custom made orthotics can help ease the pain and speed up recovery.
